A month ago, Grael, hardcore/metalcore band from Long Island, New York dropped their first EP, World Without End. There are riffs here that Slayer wish they put on their records and breakdowns that will make you break your own neck, or someone else’s nose. There’s a rabid feeling laced in the music that is sure to infect any listener and any audience member.

At only 18 minutes, this EP shreds through you, with ripping guitar tones, a drummer who’s every hit could be a reason to swap for new heads, rabid vocals, and a mix that gives you the privilege of hearing the bass lines and that leans into the rawness of the music. There is good cohesion on this EP. The tracks feel like they belong together and do a good job building off one another. The mood is consistent, pushing the intensity along well. A highlight for me, the song Hovel Redemption. The beginning of this song slows the pace down but not the intensity. The guitar is foreboding, and filled with despair. It does a great job at building the tension as you prepare for explosion into the rest of the song. Some more somber parts like this always lend to make those loud parts hit harder. But if there were too many, they wouldn’t be as special, and the constant push of intensity here is part of the appeal. This EP knows exactly what it is.

Fast forward to now, 4 weeks later, to find some 10k monthly listeners on Spotify. It’s a number, but a well deserved number for the hardworking individuals that are the backbone of not only Grael, but several of Long Island’s most promising musical offerings, including NYC Shootout, Last Laugh, Evil Ways, and Shits Creek to name a few of their other projects. These guys are lifers, they are constants in this community, who dedicate so much of what they do to contributing to it, and growing it. While I sit here, writing about it, and missing shows because I’m tired from my two jobs (yeah, I should cry about it), they’re always doing something.

Grael is a band with staying power, and a band that will continue to make noise. Catch Grael opening for Sunami and Scowl at Knockdown Center in Brooklyn, NY on November 7th, but if you can’t make that one or want to see them sooner, go check to see which one of their ever growing number of shows they have planned works best for you, or maybe just go to all of them.

Score: 9/10
