What a fucking disgusting mess this is. Long Island, NY 3-piece grind outfit Fermented Mess set out pulverize audiences into puddles, and after this release, I’d say watch where you’re stepping. Their self titled debut EP is 9 songs, and 8 minutes of bone crushing and two stepping grind that will stick with you much longer than its runtime.
You don’t need to think much, just press play. There is no warmup, you get no breathing room. Just vicious, fast, and dense sound. The murderous mood is consistent through the short runtime. Everything you want from grindcore is here. That dun dun dun dun snare thing at the start of grindcore songs before diving into pure horror? It’s here, not once, not twice, but 4 or 5 times, I think. While some could understandably say, “do something different there”, whether they consciously did that or not, I think it adds to the EP. What is grindcore if not ridiculous, fast, and rule breaking? They aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel here, they’re playing abrasive music, and playing it well. Roaring guitars, pummeling drums, and gross vocals.
There’s a lot of fake ass grind out there trying to represent by releasing some weak ass shit. Pause that, delete it from your library. As always, Long Island has got you covered. Keep Fermented Mess on repeat and go catch them at a show.
Score: 9/10
