Italian heavy metal band, Death SS released their 11th full length album, The Entity, earlier this year, and number 11 does not disappoint. I am so late to this record. I had no clue this came out back in May. It flew right over my head. To be honest, the fact I am just now listening to this in October, may have worked in the albums favor. Consider this review, and score seasonally biased.

The album starts strong with tracks like Justified Sinner and Dr. Jekyll & Sister Hyde showing you why Tobias Forge holds this band in high regard. Theatrical flair, horror and occult-laced lyrics, it’s clear where Ghost got some of their DNA. The middle of the record loses some steam for me. The songs here are fine, they just aren’t that memorable, and they kind of throw off the pacing a bit. That said, the record closes strong with tracks Cimiteria and Evil Never Dies really demonstrating that the band hasn’t lost their footing after five decades, and can still deliver the intensity, the melodies, and the macabre. I do think if the album lost 3-4 tracks, it would have tightened those loose ends and made the overall experience just a bit better. But nonetheless, The Entity proves Death SS still has plenty of spells and incantations left in their book.

Death SS is a cult classic band, and they will always get listens out of me. For fucks sake I’d love to see them live but who knows when I’ll get the chance. While this album is not their strongest to date, The Entity is a solid and enjoyable record that has a lot to offer and is well worth the listen-especially as the nights get longer and the air starts to send chills down your spine. Spooky season approved. If you’re a fan of King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, Ghost, or Alice Cooper, this record should be your next listen.

Score: 7/10
