It’s been 13 years since NYHC legends Biohazard released an album. They have now returned with Divided We Fall, featuring their classic lineup, and boy it’s refreshing to hear these guys back at it, just as if it was the early 90s. We are thrown back into that era right as we start the first track, hard riffs and some tough-guy attitude. This is streetwise 90s NYHC.

This is the bands complete playbook — mosh parts, fast parts, two-step parts, hip-hop influences, some solos and some groovy ass grooves. Biohazard aren’t phoning this shit in, they still got a bright fire burning under their asses. You can tell this album means something to the band.

Standout tracks off this record include Eyes On Six, with its strong 1-2 punch of aggression and a memorable hook, Fight To Be Free, which is a fuckin’ stomper that I can see causing some arms to swing and fists to fly. Both songs shine light on the bands songwriting ability. There’s also S.I.T.F.O.A. (stands for strength in the face of adversity). Another stomper, featuring a short little Black Album era Kirk Hammett like wah solo (you can find more of these on other songs too). I love this song it’s fucking great, but also I’m lukewarm on it. Idk what’s up,  it’s weird, or I’m weird. I’m definitely weird.

Where I struggle with this record is lyrics and momentum. Really there’s not anything “wrong” with the lyrics per se, they are classic Biohazard. Topics of unity, struggle and resilience, things that are relatable and things that I like. But depending on who you ask, the lyrics may come off as a bit corny at times, or not, again depends who you ask or what your mood is. Maybe it’s the delivery sometimes. There doesn’t need to be another “Brooklyn Beat” callout either. I get it, it’s cool and all but, it isn’t really needed. As far as momentum goes, I just feel like it’s not as explosive or feral as I’d like to hear Biohazard be. I understand it though, I’m not gonna get another Urban Discipline or State of the World Address.

There is a lot to like about this record. It is Biohazard’s best in a long time, and in many ways it feels and sounds like those classic Biohazard records we all (should) love. But it’s not a classic. That’s okay though. Divided We Fall is a good record. It is a record that is worth listening to, and it definitely has replay value. Personally, if I want to listen to Biohazard, I’m heading back to the 90s. Just is what it is. While it is not reaching the past heights of the band, Divided We Fall is a worthy return for the NYHC legends, and proves that Biohazard can still fuck it up with some of the best.

Score 6.5/10
