The German Trio released their sophomore full length album earlier this year via Napalm Records. This was a highly anticipated release for their fans including myself, their debut album Wrecking Command was a total teutonic thrash mayhem and With the Old Breed takes it even up a notch.
The album consists of 10 songs each more brutal than the last one and lasts 42 minutes.
The overall songwriting of the album will tell you that Warfield is a band which takes themselves seriously and are not afraid to stick to their original sound which makes them who they are. The songs are fast, aggressive and relentless. The album can clearly be compared to the early works of German titans such as Kreator, Sodom and Destruction.
The production of the album is definitely a step up from the last release Wrecking Command which often at times can come off as too aggressive and sharp. With the Old Breed clearly is a much more balanced and warm sounding album without losing the aggression in the sound, something which is not very easy to achieve in the production. The mixing and mastering are absolutely top notch.
Let’s talk about the guitar work in the album, even though the band only has a single guitar player, Matthias Clemens, the songs are arranged and composed in such a way that you won’t miss the second guitar player even a bit. Some good leads, hooks and layers with excellent rhythm going beneath it. The guitar tone is as good as it gets, it's dark, aggressive but still cuts through the mix.
The drums by Dominik Marx and the bass by Johannes Clemens are equally good sounding, organic and they do their job perfectly.
And finally, the vocals by Johannes, the tone, aggression and delivery is not that everyone will like but to my ears they are eargasm. The vocals, apart from the excellent guitar and drum writing, are the most enjoyable in this album and with Warfield in general.
Think of Kreator’s Coma of Souls and make it more aggressive and sharp, that’s what Warfield is all about. While the album can be considered a fast paced record there are instances where you get to breathe a little and can appreciate a comparatively slower yet uncompromising side of Warfield.
Tracks such as Tie the Rope and GASP are the best examples of this. The album ends with the title track, which is an absolute banger.
The band is touring extensively across Europe, go catch them live to see them in their full glory.
Our picks from the album would be Tie the Rope and Melting Mass.
Score: 7.5/10
