Iniquitous Savagery - Edifice of Vicissitudes

When you walk into your local kebab shop you know exactly what they serve and the quality you will get. There is no pretense and it is a very fair transaction as long as your expectations are also aligned.

It is pretty similar when it comes to the latest album, Edifice of Vicissitudes, by Iniquitous Savagery. An extreme metal act from the Scotland, the lads from up north have been serving up red hot extreme metal for over a decade now and this is their second full length album.

But why the reference to a kebab shop, you say? Let’s run through the checklist together then;

  1. Brutal album art cover

  2. Menu of songs includes titles like ‘Choked before first breath’ (technically it’s not ‘choking’, now is it), ‘Casualty of Diabolical Trial’, ‘Drenched in Righteous Offal’

  3. Meaty guttural vocals

  4. Riffs as thick as Scottish haggis with screams on the side

  5. Garlic-y Double Bass slathered all over the songs ✔✔

This comparison might seem negative but it’s not. Extreme metal isn’t for everyone, if it works for you, you love it, if it doesn’t then it just doesn’t. From the get-go, the band doesn’t faff around and gets straight down to business. The riffs are heavy, vocals are guttural, double bass going at 200bpm – all ingredients for a good and satisfying extreme metal album that you can head bang to and swing your arms and fists wildly in the mosh pit to.

This is one of those albums that can sit comfortably in the middle of your extreme metal playlist and throw violence inducing riffs and vocals at you. While majority of the album comes at you with the finesse of a sledge hammer to the face, there are more subtle aspects to the band’s music for listener who comes back to this album – If you focus on the drumming and go past the blast beats or the bass that adorns the thick riffs, you will not be disappointed. All in all, this is a pretty solid album from a band that knows their craft.
