Have you ever felt the need to go wild in a mosh pit, smash tables and chairs against the wall, and sign the devil's black book all at the same concert? Graveripper’s most recent album, "Seasons Dreaming Death," is the perfect combination of black metal, thrash metal, and death metal to really tap into that furious primal self that is just nasty and evil, the modern world tells us to repress. This band is not the new kid on the block, but this new album of theirs shows them coming out with a fury that every new band should hit the scene with.
"Seasons Dreaming Death" holds on to the thrash style we might find Kreator staying true to in their later years, and mixes an early style we could find in Immortal. Pure anger-fueled riffs that are so cold at times. Although their shortest song on the album, “An Influx of Fear,” is a no-nonsense song that contains the riffs I just described. Towards the end of this song, I was even surprised to hear a guitar solo that even sounded like something Dave Mustaine could’ve constructed. What I think I love most about this band is the presence of the bass guitar. Every note the bassist plays is right at the forefront of each song and easily keeps up with the speed of the guitar. And the vocals, not too thrashy and not too screamy; the perfect amount of anger you could hear on any Sodom album.
This is an album you have to listen to. I, for one, am a black metal lover through and through, and only dabble in thrash metal from time to time. But this album is one I just can’t stop listening to because of its ability to tap into that primal side. Even while I write this review, I have it playing in the background and can’t stop myself from headbanging along with it. "Seasons Dreaming Death" needs to be the next album you listen to with an ice-cold beer and enough chairs to smash.
