Today we are looking at a four track EP from back in January that many unfortunately missed, perhaps due to a strange mishmash of genres that are combined to create this rather intriguing style that is pretty fresh and unheard of, Blackened Stoner Thrash.
Mürtenscythe are pioneering this odd genre with style, and have so far released two EPs and two singles in this style, including the hilariously titled (Smoking Weed) Through the Horn of Satan. Their latest effort, Vodyanoy, is a great mix of the encompassed styles, with bluesy solos and bend, fast-paced riffage and shrieked vocals and atmospheric tremolo picking sections. It's a very fresh sound, bringing to mind thoughts of everything from The Sword to Emperor. You wouldn't think these styles would mesh well, but over the 22 minute runtime of Vodyanoy, Mürtenscythe prove that presumption wrong over and over again.
The opening track of the EP is the title track, which is synthy atmosphere to set the tone for the record, before The Sorcerer's Apprentice follows it up with a solidly-paced bluesy effort dripping with style and substance. One of my favourite elements of the band's sound is the bass, courtesy of Bill, aka Will Qg. His fingerprints are all over the record, with his Cliff Burton tone worship allowing for some standout moments, with plenty of bass fills and many moments to shine, at which he does not disappoint.
This French Canadian band is still very underground, but I have no doubts that with their unique style and solid instrumentation, they will strike a chord with listeners if they are given the chance to do so. Go in with an open mind, and a full 22 minutes to spare, and you will have a new wacky genre to flex to your friend
