(Band Spotlight) BRAT

Writer: SaurabhSaurabh

Think unicorns, the color pink, and music. What comes to your mind? Pop music, Britney Spears? You wouldn't be wrong. What about grindcore? No?

Well, you're wrong. BRAT is a band that does exactly this, combines all things nice, sugar and spice, adds a big dose of distortion and female-led growling vocals. The resultant man-made abomination demands a genre of its own, Bimbocore or Bimboviolence... and it is good, very, very good.

BRAT keeps it fresh; their songs are short, crisp, to the point, with an average run time being around the 2-minute mark. At the same time, they manage to cram in most of the elements you'd want and expect in a heavy metal song. Sorry, Bimbo-violence song.

The band hasn't released a full-length album yet, but they have released 2 EPs and 2 singles, with a total of 8 songs between them. Expect to hear some classic riffs, kick-ass drums, bass, and of course, the vocals. It all fits in nicely, and each song holds out on its own - that's one complaint I have about the grindcore genre; songs tend to blend into one another after about 10 minutes in, but not with BRAT.

"Human Offense," which I think dropped in 2022, is probably their best song to date. The mid-song tempo change is brilliant, and in fact, the second half of the song could easily feature in any of the first-person shooter games you see these days (I was reminded of Doom, the movie when Reaper wakes up after the Serum injection). "Grime Boss" and "Chain Pain" are great tracks too – watch out for the growl solo at the end of "Chain Pain."

All in all, I lapped up everything the band has dished out till now like a hungry waif and can't wait for more.
